DECLARATION of MONUMENT:City Park maze and adjacent greens
On 2 December 2016 with gazette notice no. 9973 the area of the City Park Maze became part of the larger National Monument area of City Park.
There is perhaps no better known feature of the park as the City Park hedge Maze, also called mtego wa panya. Designed out of an old quarry in the 1940’s the maze has long since been an iconic symbol of the park, and one of the focal points of public recreation.
What is the City Park maze?
It is physically a network of paths between hedges from which you have to find your way out. In use for more than 70 years by many thousands of park visitors, it is one of the most memorable of park facilities, especially among park visitors of the 50’s – 80’s. Sadly the maze is currently in a state of disrepair.
Monument declaration crowns the year for the Friends of City Park
2016 is the 20th year since the Friends of City Park was established, and having appealed and worked with the National Museums of Kenya, this excellent news crowns the year. Congratulations and thank you to the National Museums of Kenya.
Thank you also to all our supporters — your voice has made a great difference. We now also need you to help us restore the maze.
